Need Opinions! (beaches)

So, I've NEVER been to the beach -any ocean beach.. ever. 

I'm beginning to plan my own vacations for this coming up summer because I have to save money and what not.. and I need opinions. Because I've never gone to a beach, that's one of the main places I'd like to go. To be able to go with my friends and not have parents and what not, I have to stay on the east/south side of the US. So If anyone has any suggestions or opinions on their favorite beach or what you like about certain ones, let me know!

    Florida Beaches -- Anna Maria island is amazing, white sand, clear water, dolphins...but it is semi-private, so if you want to be around people, then Treasure island is pretty neat. Daytona Beach is a little on the dirty side, but there are great restaurants and shopping. On the plus side, if you are driving, you can visit all three.

    Virginia Beach is also very nice.
